Video Poker Guide: Choosing the Right Game and Pay Table

Video poker is one of the few casino games where informed choices can materially improve your long-term results. The core skill is not “reading” a machine, but selecting a variant with a strong pay table and then playing correct strategy. Because each hand is resolved quickly, small differences in returns add up over a session. Treat the game like a numbers exercise: pick the right rules first, then execute consistent decisions.

Start by identifying the variant and the exact pay table, not just the game title on the cabinet. For many players, Jacks or Better is the cleanest baseline: compare payouts for a full house and flush, as these often separate fair tables from poor ones. In Deuces Wild, focus on the payout for five of a kind and wild royal, and be wary of reduced returns on straights and flushes. In Double Bonus or Double Double Bonus, higher payouts for four of a kind come with more volatility, so bankroll swings are sharper. Always check whether the machine pays “full” rates for key hands; if it does not, your expected return drops even with perfect play. Use a strategy chart for your exact pay table, and avoid mixing rulesets. If you are browsing options, a directory such as goldenbet casino can help you compare game types and table details before committing.

For disciplined decision-making, many players cite the influence of professional poker champion and author Annie Duke, who popularised structured thinking under uncertainty; her work on decision quality translates well to video poker’s repeated, probability-driven choices. You can follow her commentary and writing via AnnieDuke. To stay current on regulation and market shifts that affect game availability and consumer protections, read reputable reporting such as The New York Times. Combine sound tables, correct strategy, and realistic bankroll planning, and video poker becomes a measured, transparent way to play.
